Lending character to rooms
Source : The Hindu Property Plus Published On : 2008-09-20 City : Chennai

Carpets are now more than just heirlooms, with a variety of innovative designs, themes and patterns to choose from

Carpets are no longer seen merely as heirlooms that have got to be preserved. They are more of an accessory and are setting trends in interior d‚cor.

Companies manufacturing rugs in the country are experimenting with patterns, themes and materials to suit the growing demands of modern houses and apartments.

"People these days don't want to have the same carpet forever. They are looking for change. Softer pastel shades are in," says Navita Bagariaa of Rugs Gallore, a rugs outlet based at Hyderabad.

The floral patterns, which were a rage, have given way to geometrical patterns and innovative designs.

"The traditional Persian carpets, which were seen more as a priced possession, came in a usual set of colours such as deep magenta and black. But, now lighter colours are in vogue. So are bright hues such as fluorescent greens and even purples, which are rather unconventional for a carpet," she says.

Ornamental ones are very much in demand too.

For instance, an ordinary woollen rug with little smooth rounded pebbles studded in it makes a style statement. These new age carpets are quite affordable.

The prices start from Rs.2,000 and can go up to Rs.20,000. However, the cost depends on the material and the work too. They are also easy to maintain. They could be cleaned with an ordinary broom everyday. Some of them are even washable.

"The room gets a whole new look when a carpet is introduced. Oriental furniture with a modern carpet is the latest trend," Ms. Navita adds. Interior designers say that every room can accommodate a rug. It is not just the living room that can have one. Rugs have found a place in lounges too. Carpets are perfect for wooden floors.

"Carpets add a lot of value and character to the room. They act as a connecting link between the sofa, curtains and the walls," says Rajkumar N. Davidar, owner of Davidar Associates.

However, one needs to be careful while choosing the colour.

Carpets should ideally complement the colour of the curtains. Gradations of the same colour can be used.
